Canoes are the main means of transportation. They are used to ferry the villagers to far-off gardens, to visit neighbors and family members, to carry all kind of goods, as well as for trips into the next town, Puyo. There, the Sarayaku from time to time do business or deal with authorities. When the water level is low, the trip in the crowded dugout boats can take up to two days, since the canoes frequently have to be pushed and carried over the sandbanks in the river.
