During the preparations for the festivities, the men camp for two weeks deep in the jungle to hunt. So that the meat doesn’t go bad, it is smoked immediately after the animals are disemboweled in cabinets especially constructed for this purpose. To protect the wildlife in the region, the village council decided – against the annual tradition – to only hold the festival biannually. Weddings and other major events are also celebrated during this time to avoid further hunting throughout the year. According to the responsible bodies, the strategy has already shown results and the wildlife in the zone is recovering noticeably.
