The Kichwa live in large families in wooden houses, consisting of a sleeping area and a kitchen hut, covered with palm leaves. The homes are constructed by the inhabitants themselves in a so-called Minka. During this traditional communitarian work – which has a significant value in the village – the neighbors in the surrounding area gather to build the houses collectively. In return for their help they receive free food and Chicha, a self-brewed alcoholic beverage, from the landlord. The houses are built exclusively from natural materials coming from the rainforest.
